When Your Mother is an Alcoholic
After three days in the hospital I felt we were making progress. It had been at least one year since I had seen Celeste however the relationship was the same. She pretended to be clear and on top of things. She pretended nothing was wrong despite the purple bruises that lined her back and the healing scabs which looked infected. There were old scabs and fresh ones from this fall. She was still not able to walk on her own as her legs were so weak.
I contacted her two friends left, one ex boyfriend and one girlfriend. They filled in the details. Lorrie, whom has her own problem dealing with alcoholism, described attempting to go to the city to see a show. Celeste had the tickets in her purse. They took public transportation and were excited to go out on the town. As they began walking a block or so to the theater, Celeste suddenly collapsed the middle of the
San Francisco streets! Lorrie knew she was intoxicated as usually, but did not realize this was in the cards. After the paramedics came and took Celeste away, again, their night was ruined. Still Lorrie is around.
The stories continued from her friends. The description of falls one after another was devastating. Her explanation was always one of blame, never accepting responsibility for her actions. Even more terrifying was the stories of her driving drunk and crashing her car. Still she has not been caught!
Feeling required to assist, I went to her home to clean it up a bit as her friends described a mess. Approaching the door my stomach sank. As I swung the door open the stench was sickening. In front of me was the place in which Celeste called home. Three steps in I saw the disaster. Feces dried and smeared layered the floors, blood here and there, broken glass, pills everywhere. How could someone live this way? Upstairs the sheets were filthy with blood, ashes and other marks. It looked as if they had not been cleaned in years. Even the bedsheets showed brown liquid stains everywhere. Oh my god, she can not be sane can she?
